Take a Visit To Vitra Showroom:
![]() |
The Parsons students were having the time of their life when they had the pleasure of competing in the student design competition, which brought four student teams from Parsons that actually created mock displays to show off Vitra’s line of modern furniture. From there, the winning design was chosen, which is named Parabox. All of the entries in the design competition were photographed and are on display in the Vitra showroom, quite an honor for Parsons design students!

The entries in the competition showed a huge range in student design because they all got to roll up their sleeves and showcase their taste and personalities. Some entries looked more homey and comfortable, while others were clean, modern, and fresh. If you want to take a look into the future and see what the new faces of modern and contemporary design will look like, then there is no better place to do that than by taking a glimpse at this competition which is showcasing the designs of the next generation. It is fantastic for Vitra to allow Parsons design students to stretch themselves and compete in an arena like this because they begin to understand and work on new ideas that you may be seeing in your home furniture in years to come. |

International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York!
![]() |
As if that doesn’t sound appealing enough, I actually had the pleasure of attending the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York last week from May 16 through the 19th. For those of you that have never had the pleasure of going to New York, I am completely addicted to this city because its hustle and bustle is unlike any other. If you are a lover of modern furniture and contemporary design, then this is truly an event that you must attend because the International Contemporary Furniture Fair is like Disneyland for designers.
I even had the great opportunity of attending a Broadway show, which is something that I have never done before. I figured if I was going to New York, I wanted to go all the way! I stayed at the Paramount Hotel, which is only a half a block from Times Square, and I figured that in the city that never sleeps, I may as well have dinner at midnight at a delicious Thai restaurant. The ICFF was kicked off at MOMA with an incredible opening night party that I felt lucky to attend, and overall, all of the modern art meshed and designs I saw had me drooling! |

Hang Up Those Files!
Everything has gone modular, even the file storage dividers! How do you make storage stuff look green, neat and appealing at the same time? Much like a appetizer that keeps your hunger on…. a neat cabinet that keeps your work goin…We all have our yardsticks when it comes to storage. Piling up is definitely not a great idea for offices looking for functionality. I realized open shelving systems to be a practical idea, as you can’t hide stuff behind doors anymore.
We are on the verge of a boom that will soon take a green shape, and furniture will evolve around themes that are green. So, why not start talking about it. There is good old wood, of course, adding to all the charm. These two models look quite inspiring with the clutter-less feel as your contemporary office storage cabinets. I think these two could also make a combo of great bookcases too!

All points for this modern office storage unit in tetrad Bamboo! The combo of Amber Bamboo and Natural bamboo has been used in delicate balance in a Tetris shape as to enhance its viability. It’s all smoothened and done in non-toxic oil and finish…so, you see there is more to it than face value….just wonder why is it called Brave Tetrad Bamboo…maybe, for you to stack up your office stuff boldly?

For loyal wood buffs, you get the same Tetris shape in Birch ply with different background colors that look quite spirited to me, if you ask. Here, you can attach the wooden blocks to one another. You can arrange it on floor or hang it in air; it’s your choice. It’s quite modular and light, making it convenient to assemble. And this one is called (well…any guesses!) the Brave Tetrad Flat.

Never Too Tall for Tables !
I have got into this table thing so much I can’t really pull back now. And tables in different shapes are such a delight to the eye. There is so much we need tables for, at office and home — extendible tables for dining, corner computer desks for work, modern office desks for meetings, designer office tables for routine work. We need tables for recreation, for study n for play, for almost a list of most important things I can think of. Come to think of it, how would your world look (and work) without these timeless beauties?
Maybe we don’t realize the value (you know what I mean) of it in everyday life for its always there stacked in the corner quietly, waiting to serve you (just fancying at my best….). But, this ones really from the heart for tables we had, we will have with the changing materials, shapes and cooler designs…. here are a few office power horses for your eyes,

This one I like for its unusual and broad spacey top. The extended D-top table is called Rylee D-top and it’s a product by Izzy Designs. To me, its these look like Executive Manager Office Desks. It has a multifunctional feel, for its meant to be so. Guess you can use it for conferencing, for meeting or training and so on. Uses Wood fiber core, also the veneer surface are 100% postindustrial recycle content. Izzy designs are Greenguard certified and free from any toxic material…check the sizes n colors..

I like the Rylee Round for its practicality. Easily looks like office cafeteria material, guess you can switch over according to the need. This is what I call modular office furniture. All Izzy designs meet ANSI/BIFMA standards and the green part, what I like in the design is its great shape and switchability…

We have been looking at shapes, so how can we miss the Team Table X-Base. This conference cum meeting table looks like a great multi-purpose thing for offices. The border looks quite innovative and the metal cross base goes well with the design…think it’s worth the buy…

Geoffrey Bawa and Sustainability
![]() |
Last year on my visit to Srilanka, I had the chance of witnessing the work of the great Geoffrey Bawa. It was one thing to read about his architectural aptitude (and see his work on paper) and quite another to actually see what it means to tie modernity within the roots of a rich architectural culture. Unique to his work, one of his earliest buildings, a courtyard house built in Colombo for Ena De Silva in 1961 is an excellent example of this merger.
Bawa has fused elements of Sinhalese domestic architecture and effortlessly blended it with concepts of open planning, indicating that an outdoor life can be equally viable on a tight urban plot.
Some of his prominent buildings include the Bentota Beach Hotel of 1968 which was Sri Lanka’s first function-based modern resort hotel that looks into the needs of tourist with a rare sense of place and continuity. And it’s awesome! Then the famous Parliament house that is a spectacular sequence of copper roofs floating above a series of terraces rising from the water (an artificial lake). The Ruhunu University near Matara is again a masterpiece showcasing a matrix of pavilions and courtyards, mastered with a strong sense of theatre across the rocky hills with a look out over the Southern ocean. The Kandalama, another unique hotel amidst austere jungle around a rocky outcrop was amazing; and so was the Lighthouse at Galle which got destroyed in Tsunami 2004. Bawa also designed hotels in Bali and Bintan, I was told, and a few houses in Delhi and Ahmedabad, and a Cloud Center for Singapore.
I missed the house he designed for the Jayawardene family in 1997 on the cliffs of Mirissa, leaves me with something to come back for, a country as scenic and beautiful as some of finest architectural wonders (Bawa)works….the thought makes me smile…again…
