Raising children in an apartment may not always leave us with much space. Be it an apartment or independent house, kids beds and wood rocking chairs make indispensible pieces of furniture. There may not be enough room for packed child table and chair set, but a rocking chair will find its place around the corner. So will kids study table/ workstations. On kids beds, work on sturdiness and simplicity of design, check for blunt corners and edges, and let the bedroom décor be fairly sprightly, nothing too girly or boyish (read pinks and blues) but rather a fairly neutral theme. You can always add colors with accessories like kids rugs, murals and hangings, curtains and bedding..

This will help you later as the kids grow up, for you won’t need any drastic changes apart from a few things here and there, which is sure to cut down the costs on renovations. And like Meg and I, we were discussing the other day kids grow so very fast, making some of our earlier buys a thing of past. So plan diligently, wisely and keep it simple, it’s the mantra these days….. |

Playful Chairs
Desks are great. Next I move to childrens chairs, how about some really perky designs for kids. Kids furniture has come to mean a lot and kids chairs are an integral part of bedrooms and playrooms. Ergonomics plays a different role in kids furniture, the designs also call for elements of safety and liveliness. Must mention two enterprising designs!!!
The Taj modern and the Rhodes The Taj modern and the Rhodes chair. You ought to take a look at these down-to-earth chairs, I really fell for the agile features and untamed creativity. Looks like original thinking to me(and how rare it is getting these days). Starting with Rhodes, I love the safe stretch of legs(read broad), and the blunt edges and light weight. Seems like little tom and princess can easily drag the chair in and out. Claims the chair can carry 250 lbs!!!(now that’s engineering!) looks like the thing for little devils learning to learn acrobat, J even hangs a towel on his back while jumping off his chair….
The Taj (wonder why they call it that) is a neat design. The armless chair with foot rest is lightweight and suitable for kids in the age group of 2-4 years(so it says). I like the sturdy birch wood construction that looks robust. The height can be adjusted to 12.5 inches to increase the life of the chair as your toddler grows up.

Boxes and Toys
Baby furniture, kids storage, childrens bedroom furniture……what next? I should have seen all your mails to get the hint. Well, storage did strike me as an important element, and I do understand that clutter can get unnerving at times, and you just keep wondering whether you should let kids be kids or just try to set up the rules first. I suggest you relax, and let them be kids. For the clutter, you can always have something like a toy bin/box and ask them to put back the toys once the playtime is over.
Take a look at the Fuji toy box handcrafted(yes) using birchwood. I like the storage idea that doubles up as the fun bench on the floor. The slow closing lid on top is designed for the safety of little hands, and the unit can be moved around. I can but feel the excitement of evening play times in the patio with the mobile play bin! The choice of colors is fine…
For older kids, I suggest the Eiffel contemporary on wheels…..wheeeeeew. it’s a rather cute design with a central open space for display. More of a display unit with rectangular book shelves around. It’s a fun design….also check out the cool loom storage face=”Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif” size=2> system designed after you know what…?
I think it’s nice and all for older kids, the aesthetics are superb. The idea is to store, play and sit. And be on move. The Trolley toy storage fits under the base unit with ease, the multifunctional trolley acting as a seating unit and the base with subdivided tray functions alone as a desk for study/play (play looks more on the mind with kids anyway). Best features: one base unit with two top units for storage, individual pieces can be stacked or used separately, has a kit for securing system to wall for safety(did it look like it will slide on to you at first glance). Well….non-toxic lacquer and veneers, water-resistant fabric are in place. I really think it’s a unique design…..give it your eye…

On function….on kid storage

Thank you guys, I am glad to read from you all (as always). Kids storage furniture looks like the thing you guys are curious about….well, like I say with babies at home, the whole idea of utility draws towards practical things like furniture and stuff. Kids storage unit needs to function as many things as kids grow fast and you don’t want the furniture to go obsolete…not so soon at least…

Three designs on kids room storage cum changers, the Sabrina Modern Changer. The minimalist design includes side drawer for keeping the changing stuff out of sight, and the best feature so far for this unit is when the child grows the top can be flipped and made usable(for storage). Simple design in ebonized ash veneer and white lacquer

Another version of a changer is the Modern loft. The design is more elaborate. There is a convenient storage tray along with a drawer that smartly conceals the changing essentials. I like the idea of a bottom shelf for added storage. The partition on the tray can be removed to convert it into a tray-topped cabinet once the baby grows. I think it makes a considerate design for everyday life….

As I look around, I saw something similar but not a changer. It’s a great design…must mention the Forest Designer Shelf. It looks like a handy thing to have around home and offices. The cute little cubicle is a great thing for smaller study rooms too. The wooden construction is available in red brown finish.

It takes us to the next round, individual Kids furniture grows faster than kids do. And this makes choosing the right furniture for them bit of a task!! With J, we learnt the hard way that furniture can actually be used for at least some years. Items like kids storage units, childrens desks and things can be made to last by picking prudently. Here are a couple of kids stuff I saw and thought you would like ‘em too. Like the Fundy Play table with its cool locking casters, used to stroll indoors and outdoors with great ease. Paper may never come in so handy with small kids, and I love the design that incorporates a chalk board top/(dry erase top) for every day use. The best part is that the table comes with two different sized legs, and there is storage underneath for tit bits like crayons, chalks, pencils and stuff. it is what I call intelligent design.

It takes us to the next round, individual desks for kids. For apartments short on space, I think the Childrens desk may look like a great alternative. Great for age 2 to 5, I like the spacey desk top and the modular design element. It comes equipped with smart storage beneath the seat. Uses fiber board with wood veneers(sturdy enough for small kids). We wouldn’t miss the world for grown up kids, like the 6+ age. How could we! Well, the Loom desk can be set to two heights. This is probably the best example of choosing diligently, the design includes a power strip station at back of desk, extra pullout desk surface, a pencil draw and two side drawers and a pedestal. And best of all, great design…minimalist and highly functional.
