Modern day living norms

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I often see those out of the world magazine décor themes that look so picture puuuuuuuuuurfect that you start wondering what would happen if you put a kid in this very room. You know a room full of delicate glass and fluffy carpets and perfect table tops with runners….. with a house full of little energetic people those kind of things don’t always fit into the imagination bracket …?.

Splitback Contemporary Sofa Bed by Innovation

Before J, we had the uber spirit to upkeep a spotless house with so-called modern furniture and art, an open terrace garden with a large leafy flowery variety of plants. And, we would return back from office to the spotless house everyday. Things have changed after the babies, and it has its joys and blessings, but a spotless home is not one of them. childhood has its phases of learning, and it has something for each one of us to rediscover, on practical terms, we added daybeds to our dictionary of furniture, and they are so convenient for afternoon naps that now we wonder why we didn’t think of them before…?.

Our day bed has a storage compartment underneath for bedding and it works perfectly well for i don’t need to hop into the bedroom every now and then….

Sofa Bed

How can leather sofa beds, end tables and glass coffee tables ever fit into our apartments and lifestyles without cramming up? The answer is simple. Look for two-way functionality to save space and add utility. The sofa bed is a sure sleek way to transform furniture into a day/night bed to save space. The engineering of these modern day beauties has been detailed to perform like a full-fledged bed.

While coffee tables can mean many things at home, the concept may really be transforming into a more meaningful piece of furniture to be held in unison and separation. Sometimes a contrasting coffee table is used to turn away from rest of the theme, but often integrated on a pragmatic level for family and friend times. So do end tables appear to have more utility today. Owing to its stackability and easy features, it can be used for many a function with ease. I really admire the spirit of Modern Furniture that tries to keep things clean lined and ideal for multi-utility.

The Story of the Flower and the Embroidery…

Friday, September 25th, 2009

You’ve invested in a plush, ultramodern condo and need sleek and gorgeous contemporary furniture. If you are design magazine buff like me, you are probably going through scores of them, trying to look for the best couch and beds and dressers to set up your pad in style.

Splitback Contemporary Sofa Bed

If you want a sofa that’s high up on the style factor and unique in its own way, I’d suggest go in for a daybed like I have. There are some good ones out there like the stunning Splitback Contemporary Sofa Bed which can be opened out in three comfortable positions. What’s a better way to lounge and listen to some great music than that? And it comes in black and white vinyl, perfect for easy maintenance lovers like me.

Serena Modern Daybed

If you are trying to club class and comfort together, it’s also a good idea to get a daybed like the Serena Modern Daybed for example. It’s contemporary in looks and function. Sleek and comfortable, you can choose between black or white vinyl that goes fabulously with the polished chrome legs combo.

Gem Contemporary Sofa Bed

But sometimes I do love furniture with a touch of fun and if you share my taste, go see the Gem Contemporary Sofa Bed . The flexible sides can transform this fun sofa into a chaise lounge or bed, each comfortable in its own way. You can get it in three colors, striking red being one of them. If I were to select a talking point for the lounge area in my condo, this is the one I would go for.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Willow Chair

Charles R Mackintosh was born on June 7, 1868, in Glasgow. The celebrated architect was one amongst eleven siblings living in the Towhead area of Glasgow, close to Glasgow Cathedral. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art. It is important to understand his work and his dislike of Victorian style of architecture. His idea of architecture was simplicity of geometric shapes and simple forms. Amongst his designs, the famed Glasgow School of Art (1897-99), follows his principles openly, with its plain rectangular framework, and long and simple curves and understated presence. Mackintosh was an outstanding interior European designers, and (from 1897 to 1912) his design scheme for the Cranston chain of tearooms in Glasgow are quite popular.

He met his future wife Margaret Macdonald at the Glasgow School of Art, and the husband and wife team collaborated on different projects. I have often wondered about his mastery in handling light and space, evident in his furniture design that became icons by itself. His earlier furniture designs were unique in the sense that they exhibited strong bonding with the arts and crafts movement—the art deco movement. Mackintosh’s versatility and his choice of color, shape and form were unique. Many of his remarkable designs are painted white with skillfully synchronized colored stencils of flower patterns.

His modern designs were titled Art Nouveau; they were devoid of ornamentation and excessive decorations. This probably was one of the factors that appealed to designer members of the Vienna Secession. Mackintosh exhibited his work in 1900 at the Secessionist Exhibition in Vienna. His modern furniture was much admired and thus began his international following. Some his unique designs include the Willow chair, the Mackintosh small table and the brilliant folding table.

His work played a significant role in shaping the 20th-century trend toward simplification and functionalism. Mackintosh died in London in 1928. It took decades for his work to earn a permanent place in the history of design. In the late 1970s the Mackintosh House, his studio-home in Glasgow, were reconstructed and set off as a museum. Mackintosh is internationally celebrated as one of the foremost architects and designers of the early 20th century.

Women Architects

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

In the wake of US OF A making history with nomination of its first Black candidate for a supreme job, I would like to dedicate some blogs to Women and Minority designers in the field of architecture and furniture design.

LILY REISCH – Co- designer of Barcelona chair

Accredited for co-designing some of Mies’ most famous works – his Barcelona chair, also known as the pavilion chair and the Brno chair, Reich started her career as a modernist designer with textile and fashion design. She met Mies Van Der Rohe at the Werkbund, a German association for artists, architects, designers, and industrialists. For thirteen years between 1925 and 1938, when Mies immigrated to the USA, the couple shared personal and professional domains. Interestingly, Albert Pheiffer, Vice President of Design and Management at Knoll, who has been researching on Reich for some time points out:

“It became more than a coincidence that Mies’s involvement and success in exhibition design began at the same time as his personal relationship with Reich”. And “It is interesting to note that Mies did not fully develop any contemporary furniture successfully before or after his collaboration with Reich.”

Eileen Gray (again one of my faves) was born in an aristocratic Irish family. One of the pioneers of modern design during the 1920s and 30s, her tubular steel furniture design were ground breaking. The Bibendum chair designed by Eileen Gray in the early 1900s was largely forgotten until an original surfaced in a 1972 auction prompting a new production of this design classic. In the second stage of her career, Eileen Gray switched to architecture and continued producing masterpieces. And her legendary Adjustable Table E 1027 has been added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. I saw a replica of the Adjustable table at Spacify with a 10 year warranty—check it out.

There are other designs by Reich and Rohe like the popular Barcelona day bed and the Bench. Priceless modern classics…..

Fancy Post!

Sofa

Fancy hair color….fancy car seats and fancy lens hues…hmmm…. fancy this, fancy that; wonder whether my moods turn fancier too. How about some fancy leather sofas and accent chairs???? Yes, I am inspired. The modern sofa means more than fancy furniture though; it also means comfort and relaxation. I guess aesthetics do matter, but this post is high on it…..check up a couple of designs….for your eyes…

Quite a design—the Velocity (force multiplied by acceleration!) has a new formula. Just keep musing if it is comfy too….but surely a stunner. Love the way the leather covers the base and swivels all the way up…space age stuff…I know you like it too…Fancier would be the Specter swivel. The seat is almost a modified spaceship..:) the hi-back is remarkable, the seat spreads lavishly, say we like the bizarre… its futuristic stuff and makes an impact.

Before I decide to fly out, let me point out another great design…the Baron armchair. love the verticals—contoured styling. Its not leather, its leatherette, so get to wash it too. Nice stuff…eh…

Hadid’s Modernism

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Every time we think of Iraq as a country, we associate with war, suicide bombers and the never ending debate for Presidential elections. On debate are the limitations of war, the idea of conquering a bigger war(the mental divide) and ending cold-blooded terrorism. (Suggested deletion: We fail to look at the positive aspects of war laden country.) Let’s focus on positive aspects, architecture and architects, for instance. Zaha Hadid who was born in Baghdad, is one of few accomplished women architects of modern architecture. Her buildings evoke a sense of mystery and wonder. The prize winner has a style she can call her own. I saw her work at the modern and contemporary furniture exhibition in Milan, Italy.

Designer Chairs

Some of her spectacular buildings include the Vitra FireStation in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Vitra is a Swiss (originally German) manufacturer of designer modern furnitur. It is the European manufacturer and retailer of the works of many internationally renowned home furniture designers. In 1993, Hadid added a fire station – her first completed building – to the premises. The whole building is constructed of exposed, reinforced in-situ concrete. The unique shape with sharp edges, the bare structure devoid of roof edgings and claddings proffers a prismatic simplicity of form, almost like an abstract architectural concept. As one passes across the spaces of the fire station, you get to catch glimpses of the large red fire engines. The fire station now houses the Design Museum’s international collection of designer chairs. The whole museum looks like a movement, frozen in time.

Modern Design in Taiwan for Guggenheim

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

A contrast from organic shape of Frank Llyoyd’s Guggenheim, this building reflects modern and contemporary design in 21st century. Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum is a proposed art museum in the city of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Zaha had proposed a “mystical object, hovering over spindled artificial landscape strip”. She chose to draw a contrast between the building’s forms and the vertical forms of nearby skyscrapers, the top of the building prudently reflecting the backdrop of the Vilnius city. Hadid asserted that “It is especially important today to acknowledge cultural buildings, that they have unique and special morphologies. Those buildings should make an impression on people, people should accept them.” The dynamism and fluidity of the elongated form suggests an emphasis of movement through and around the building. Brilliant work.

Sofa

Hong Kong Polytechnic University is known as the tentative “Innovation Tower,” Hadid’s 130,000-square-foot complex is made of two adjoining buildings, each with a jagged facade that looks and feels like the face of a cliff! Made of transparent but tinted glass, the curtain wall will be shielded in parts by polished metal louvers that suggest the effect of an ocean liner in shift. Located near the entrance to the city’s main cross-harbor tunnel, the $51 million project will be mostly funded by the local government and is expected to break ground by 2009.
