US Independence Day (July 4th)

4th July is here. I am sure the Independence Day fervor is high with fireworks, summer festival, parades, barbecues, picnics(thats us), carnivals, baseball, and events celebrating the historical moments and customs of the United States. Well, wishing you all a super 232nd Independence Day (hey I saw wiki run a detailed feature on American history with some orig. pictures)! The PCA at Redwood will be holding parades, fireworks as usual we plan to go picnic with bunch of friends
	I have been meaning to post a few entrees on outdoor wicker furniture, and forgot all about it till I saw an egg in the morning. Its not funny! You will know why. You see the my fave out of the three�the Hanging Egg Occasional Chair is a fancy thing and we like it for the patio. The cocoon shape is cozy and swinging will be fun for J, and evenings a pleasure. My admiration for wicker design outdoor furniture has grown four folds after I saw the design. Well, its safe to have one outdoors, around the garden and pool, for it uses polyethylene woven rattan and a sturdy powder-coated double-welded aluminum frame. The waterproof foam pillow upholstered in and UV-protected (wonder what that means) poly cotton fabric all sounds so good
	For the patio, the modern outdoor Riviera Arm Chair Sofa is probably a better design esp. for our place, but we are stuck on the hanging egg design..the armchair too is designer stuff, while wicker looks contemporary, the seat n back are a tad neat. Wickered in flat weave, all the finishes look great, though the antique brown looks more naturalreally depends on your taste. The cushions and fabric are all the above and available in three colors.
	Actually, this Riviera Armless Chair is sumptuous enough to have a halfway nap in the glass room or by the pool. I like it as a pair with the Riveria armchair� it would make a fab. statement in the garden. On a lazy afternoon(a rarity in practical terms), just lazing there with a book would be fun. Its flat weave wicker in polyethylene rattan, and the double-welded aluminium frame should make it just stay there outdoorsthough, I would not take a chance. check the care instructionsor write in.happy festiving

ICFF Highlights�Adriana Hoyos

Voted for Peoples choice award as the most memorable exhibitor at ICFF 2008, Adriana Hoyoss Caramelo collection has been admired for its modern appeal and traditional craftsmanship. Simply put, Hoyoss furniture is remarkable. Signature warm, ingenuous designs and her inspirational use of natural materials!
The Latin American designer is also popular as an interior designer who has been associated with major international chains such as Starwood, Swissotel, Hilton and the recently commissioned Trump Ocean Club Panama project. An accomplished international interior designer, Hoyos is a pioneer of her unique style in both interior design and the furniture collections. Her collections are themed around retro-modernism, and I admire her use of natural materials from back home�Ecuador. Her collection has it all � upholstered dining chairs, dining room furniture, contemporary sofas and home theater seating and many exciting designs rooted in nature.
	One of my faves includes the Tagua Dining table. The tall and handsome table meets the approval of many contemporary furniture buffs. What I like is the design element, effortlessly individualized with the central theme of tagua, yes, we like all the themes�caf�(hear coffffeeeee rich coffeeee), tagua(you know it now), coco(yes, inspired by the coconut fruit)Caramelo(contrasts between light and dark�fab. stuff) and chocolate( guessed it yet? from the delightful fruit cacao, hear chocolatesmiles).
	The Tagua Love seat with vertical retro lines has a nostalgic quality. The low-slung two-seater is carved out of tropical wood; and the result is a sophisticated textured design. This talented designer need not look further than her own culture to find inspiration. In her words, "I grew up surrounded by natural and exotic materials from the subtropical areas of Columbia," she said. "These experiences had a great influence in my professional career because I felt attracted to, and identified by, the applications of innate elements. The use of tagua, coconut shells for the inlays and ebony veneers in my latest collection are examples of the elements that give our furniture a distinctive and unique look."
	I also like her Tagua collection that uses palm seeds (fruits of ivory-nut palm) known as �vegetable ivory in her architectural themes, few of the models I suggest�the Tagua cocktail table. its the drum-shaped (or inverted ear-phone�perception!) with a central circle of palm seeds looks native and original. I find it intriguing, original and quite suavish.

ICFF Highlights-Indi B Rugs

Indi B Rugs grabbed attention at the ICFF (a Candyland; no way!) for their inventive floor coverings. I did fall for some of their stunning decorative rugs. After working for several years, as Lead Designer, Architect and Project Director for some well know international interior design firms, Beatrice Girelli decided the time was right to strike out on her own and founded Indi B that to unique home furnishings.
It seems with more than 600 exhibitors from every corner of the globe, texture was one of �the theme at ICFF. So was wood�cant forget Morimotos pendant lamps that were remarkable. Put on show were Girelli's IndiB multi-level cut and loop modern area rugs in wool, viscose and silk with color-saturated images of gingko leaves and branches.
	My faves include the silver, the deck red and the branches.b. The Silver Rug I like for its individuality. The pattern is bold enough to fit into a variety of drawing and bedroom spaces, yet contemporary and soothing in its own way. Hand-tufted with New Zealand wool with viscose and silk accents, the cut and loop bestows the rug with a depth and rich quality. The rugs claim to be child labor free, in line with the UN Child Labor Law Convention.
	The Deck Designer Rug is unusual. The contrasts stand out. It has a feverish contemporary touch that looks addictive. I learnt that the rugs are soft, durable and easy to clean with warm water and soap! Uses cent percent New Zealand Wool, viscose and silk accents, sizes are freely customizable and colors can be opted for at added price.
	The Branches Rug seems to draw inspiration from gingko leaves and branches. The hand-tufted rug again uses cuts and loops to add dept and the result is a great rug design. The backing uses latex with cotton tape at edges.

ICFF Highlights�Orange22

From iconic symbols of innovation to social design inspiration�Orange22 stood out at the ICFF. If you have been there, I am sure you could not have missed out this booth. The Blank canvas series�a concept backed by eight renowned designers�new version of Orange 22s eco-friendly indoor-outdoor furniture.
	Established in 2000 by Dario Antonioni, the LA-based design lab �Orange22� creates and fabricates mass-market and limited-edition objects and furniture. Their idea is to brand-define retail environments, residential interiors and design concepts licensed for mass production.
	The designers who came together for Orange22 Design Lab in the Blank Canvas Project�Joe Ricchio with Kara Larsen, Claude Zellweger, Milton Glaser, Kahi Lee, Yves Behar, Margo Chase, Karim Rashid, Massimo and Lella Vignellil. Each designer has created a new edition of Orange22 indoor- outdoor, eco-friendly Botanist furniture. The best part, Orange22 matches the designers royalties to a foundation or charity of their choice. Inspirational work plus a social cause�the idea is def. appealing.
	The vision for �Botanist� is a blank canvas for creating a collaborative product with internationally renowned designers and artists. The green designs use water-jet graphics, colors and surface materials. On display was a range of contemporary coffee tables, side tables, and designer end tables, modern cocktail table: why I could even find many other functions for the multi-faceted designs

Must say my quest for kids furniture made interesting exploration. Also as I was keen on exceptional designs; and also did hit upon some really exciting ones in the segment�loft bunk beds, multi-functional modern kids bed, child bedroom furniture and some advanced designs in toddler furniture. Must mention DucDuc that I admire for its rational designs that are based on such clear kid-oriented practicality. In Philip Erdoes (CEO) words, �Our basic principle is versatility. Every piece has to last a long time and warrant being in parts of the house other than the nursery." Thoughtful, just like their designs.
	Must talk of their Cabana series. The full-size cabana canopy bed looks neat. The Mortise and tenon construction ensures strength and durability. For those wondering what it exactly means, it is a kind of carpentry used to attach two perpendicular pieces of wood where a carved out notch of one fits into a carved out hole of the other. The bolster pillows provide additional support (guess, its optional). You could customize the design with your own material too.
	I also like the trendy cabana desk. Constructed in hardwood, the three-draw desk makes a neat design. Done in non-toxic lacquered paint, the bench just slides in effortlessly. I like the white, though there are other colors.
	And the Cabana credenza I adore for its versatility. The unit is available with all doors, all drawers, or a combination (which is simply great!). There are adjustable shelves behind the doors, and the mortise and tenon construction looks like a clean functional design. You could opt for fabric panels or color painted backs for doors. Also, the choice of customizing the unit with your choice of material..like I said truly handy stuff..

On more of ICFFs green theme, must mention the Lannones cork dear cabinet and the table, which used car parts in vibrant colors (quite airy), wellwellwe are inspired. Then the Waste lamp made by recycled plastic knives was a fresh ideathere are more, actually I am not yet over with kids furniture, and must say there is more to come on kids bed, unique toddler bedroom furniture, baby nursery furniture and more.
The posts focus�CASAkids founded by designer Roberto Gil. Gil, I believe has designed successful furniture ranges for names like Offi, Simplicity, Alex Toys, Ameriwood, Crate and Barrel, and Williams-Sonoma. The unique touch in his designs can be marked by proficient use of material and innate connecting systems that are inspired by �practical minimalism. I am with the concept of furniture in terms of longevity, a connection that most of us are losing out on. Why. I remember furniture used to be a part of growing up when we were young. and kids do get comfortable thinking of furniture they have grown on, literally. beds, for instance
	I like the Ola! Crib. The crib is designed to last your baby from birth, to toddler-hood right into teenage. The convertible crib has a three height-adjustable mattress platform and fixed side rails. Constructed using the eco-friendly Lyptus wood that is a product of a hybrid variety of Eucalyptus(mostly grown in Brazil).
	To convert from a crib, simply remove the sides and transform it to an Ola! Toddler bed and twin size bed. Once the toddler bed outgrows, the cribs side panels can be used to convert it into a twin bed. Isnt it great.on a second thought, its fabulous designing, Roberto.
	I must say the Ola! Dresser is a product of superb engineering. Marked with signature creativity, the Lyptus and MDF construction can be retained long after your child has grown up. The armoire and dresser are designed to last. The drawers do not use metal sliders, and rather slide on hardwood runners. The 4-drawer unit makes a clean neat design.

ICFF Highlights�Argington

The emails were outstanding. Thank you, all you out there. Do also post up some comments. Yes, I know there have been more names in baby furniture that are synonymous with quality and sophistication. I would be covering up one by one, so that we dont miss out on any of the great kids furniture designs. I have seen kids bunk beds in so many fancy things and colors and sometimes they look, well.. Out-dated (who knows, they may actually be). The concept of bunk beds has been on for quite some time, I remember as a kid I used to wonder if there is something different too. A look at Argington furniture brought a smile to the child in me.
	I must point out the Sahara Crib, and I am sure it would make parents happy too! Amongst a line of new designs in Argington nursery line, Sahara crib has it all�a trundle storage drawer, 3-point mattress height adjustment, and the possibility of transforming the crib to a full-fledged bed with the help of a kit. I fell for the compact and ergonomic model that I learn conforms to all regulations set forth by ASTM, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Health Canada.
	More on utility reminds me of their Delphi Changing Table that can be integrated with the Sahara Crib. Whats unique? Well, built up in layers equipped with different kinds of spaces and storage room, in combination of a cantilevered changing pad (all in one), yeah. I like the design that allows you to change the baby from the front or side, which ever is more convenient. The changing pad tray snugly holds the changing pad in place. The tray can be removed when the baby grows up, simple and thoughtfulgood design.
	Named after Ayers Rock, the world's largest monolith and an aboriginal sacred site is Australia's Kata Tjuta National Park. Its quite a sight to watch the rock change colors at sunset, with crimsons turning to rusts, and pinks to mauves. The Ayers Twin Bed has a great trundle bed beneath that can accommodate a 5-inch mattress, the design is simple and well accomplished, and the mattress support is ventilated. Like I said, bunk beds are great and all, but they are not all that we have.I like this idea of twin beds that saves on space(for smaller rooms) and adds up to the overall function. I guess, you could choose from about 5 wood finishes.

ICFF Highlights - NURSERY WORKS

The ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) this May (19th) held in NYC took a good deal 6-hours of walk to cover it up. Followed up by the Milan fair theme (not over with it), sticking with the green design, must mention the felt flip low chair design by Cate & Helson. Loved the Schmitt bamboo lamps (as always), the garbage chair and newspaper chair by CCA booth looked like fine attempts, and the Trubridges spiral Island booth as also the light sculpture Hori Morimoto were fabulous.
But, apart from the eco-designs, I found some great kids furniture that compelled this post. There were striking designs on kids playroom furniture, toddler bedroom furniture and modern baby furniture. The designs belong to Nursery work, an LA-based furnishings firm founded by Traci Fleming and Kaye Popofsky Kramer. Their furniture and furnishing strike a cord with parents and children looking for modern furniture, bedding and accessories.
	Let's just say that Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning are filled with great greeting ideas for both babies and parents. As a part of their actively positive part of parenting, the founders of Nursery works are well versed with integrating nursery with inspirational kids bedroom furniture set in line with rest of the home. On the ones I like, must say the Aerial crib. The adjustable side rails, three-point adjustable mattress height, the choice of two-drawers under the crib (must say a considerate design ), and the option of converting the crib to toddler bed with the help of an easy conversion kit at extra $$. The pine wood rails come with color choice, apart from the other color options.
	The Platform bed is a fine design by Lawson-Fenning team again. The idea of underneath drawer is great, and you could opt for a trundle bed at extra price. I guess you could customize your own bed with fav colors and patterns online. Overall, clean lines, great function�good job!
	The Nightstand box by Nursery works makes a neat unit with two draws detailed with finger grooves. I also like the part that it can easily be blended with any other design and nursery theme. The colors are bold enough for the gen-X baby and up-to-date parents looking for a combination of features to suit their urbane lifestyles.

Milan Highlights�La Fete

At first the name struck the mind; next came the design (for once). Incidentally, one of my fav electropop music guys�Vive La Fete�a Belgium group (reminiscence of 80s music) got me all nostalgic (try their first album Attaque Surprise) and all. Back to the design scene, the La Fete logo says �the scene outdoors so I had to peep in. And must say I liked some of the catchy sculptural lounge seating stuff and a few contemporary outdoor furniture designs that just stood there gasping for air�they did their job well.
	A joint venture of Angie Thornbury, asid/cid and Softub, Inc., a 20-year-old manufacturer of outdoor products, La fete plays a new concept in outdoor living. Their Crib outdoor bed has the attitude and modern instincts. The concept is dearly urbane. I learnt that the sculptural beauty uses patented polymeric technology. The structural foam and outdoors cushion foam has been sheathed in a waterproof membrane, and then covered with marine grade vinyl, the same marine-grade vinyl used on yachts and outdoor recreational vehicles! Its light and a stunner, btw!
	I like the Sun Pad Lounger. Its a concept and has been well received. The lounger looks chic for sun basking, and for casual seating arrangement in groups (those outdoor chats and all). The circle has inherent powers to transform, and the modular unit has also been well proofed against sun, chlorine, and salt water. It claims to be tested for heavy usagewhatever; my eye just keeps seeing it next to the pool, though there are other ones
	There is the Check outdoor seating range that I cant complete this blog without. Subtle and modern, quite the taste for modern patio furniture, I think the 3-seater is promising. The clean lines and low-slung design may stand out in stark contrast to the outdoors. The deep cut seat is a comforter, and it again uses the all-weather premium yacht vinyl. As to the concept of Chill White, La Fetes words - it is an open "canvas" that can be signature embroidered or slipcovered for customization.
I think they are good, as to the chill-white, as long as you are able to spray with a hose and clean up regularly, I think it should be OK. For others, more neutral tones may sound like the idea. I am sure they would make great outdoor patio furniture for resort hotels and residences. Long live the party�vive la fete! More on Milan Show, I abs. loved the Janitor, eight rung ladder. The ladder equipped with a brilliant light bulb and short hanging switch at the very top, a ticker that allows the climber the time to think about use of energy consumption.
	The next in focus is the designer furniture store AntiDiva. AntiDivas Fluetta and Bloob won the Young design award in earlier Milan Furniture Shows. A baby of Maurizio Giodani, I think the Confident grabbed attention as a fine piece of furniture. A great one-piece structure frame construction in Pine, the squares are homogeneous, and the effect is stunning. The structure uses polyurethane padding with a polyamide velvet support. Seat and back in polyurethane foam can be filled with sterilized duck down (great for people allergic to synthetic fiber, like myself) or regular acrylic fibers. Looks like the thing for hotels, office receptions and contemporary homes.
	On modern living room furniture, the au courant Sally is an armchair that strikes as highly sophisticated design. The swivel-based chair in satinized stainless steel, the internal frame in metal with injection of flexible and polyurethane Doow covered with a polyamide velvet support. Choice of upholstery�removable fabric or leather�made my day�just a look at the ultramodern design.
	Tukama is a fantastic sofa designed by Francecsa Donati. A fresh breeze of air away from linear designs with petty deviations here and there, this evolutionary piece of furniture rocks! This curved sofa had many breathe in and notice. If space is not a constraint, group interactions and eye-to-eye contacts become effortless (thanks to the great design details). And we so need innovations in the sofa segment. it is a well-timed change. There is Tukama and a full circle Mikamaa concept in luxurious seating, each of the contemporary sofas offers optimum comfort.call it innovation at its best. The cushions been filled with polystyrene and waterlilly! The removable covers are available in fabric/ leather.

Milan HIGHLIGHTS�Cattelan Italia

�Green was the fervor this April at the Milan fair 2008. And we had moments inviting us to more practical aspects of eco-friendliness (greenagry design). I loved the sight of Toshiyukis Sunplant at the entrance; the structure I learnt used photovoltaic cells to charge rechargeable batteries. The big entrance sign �Viva il Verde! Go Green was a fresh note to start with
On the furniture highlights, I plan to start a series of posts on the popular happening brands and designs in the event (you bet there were many) to ensure I cover systematically. Must say there were a host of bedroom interior design ideas, modern console tables, contemporary TV stands and dining room chairs that caught the attention.
	Starting with Italys very own Cattelan Italia. The highlights??? I must say the Valentinox Console was stunning. It makes ingenuous furniture revealing superb engineering. Designed by Emanuele Zenere, the polished steel stainless steel base and the cylinder stun as stark shapes, while the layered top in clear glass completes the trilogy.
	On �ber-designs, I like Cattelans Matisse Bed designed by Leonardo Dainelli. The clean symmetrical flow of lines with a super high headboard, all of it upholstered in soft leather. The design has a possibility of pull-up slats with container, for tight spaces, like I said truly �ber in spirits.
	I also liked the Window TV, a cool bookcase-cum-entertainment unit. Basically a sole bookcase unit in Black/White painted MDF, the TV holder version is great for all the right reasons
	After the award winning Bella by G. Cattelan, Betty is the next al a mode. The sensuous shape plus detailed structural engineering is a big wow. The steel frame upholstered in removable fabric or soft leather with a chromed steel base (two inverted arcs that look fab.), there is a mystery factor that arrests.

Sectional Sofas�Fabric

Indoors have been out for a long time, at least from my posts. But living room trends have been bolder than even and my guess is that its here for keeps; and modern seating includes so much more than before � the fashion statement includes contemporary living room couch, sectional sofas, and fabric sofas. Allowing your living room to breathe in curious color co-ordinations and unusual furniture calls for a shift in outlook and perspective.

For some of us, it may just not be the thing. So, I dedicate the blog to peppy designs that strike a modern note without overbearing or understating its presence. Check out the space for more such ideas to come up

	On a practical note, the concept may be what you are used to, but wrapped in a fresh scheming in terms of color, fabric and print. The Imelda collection reflects just this very idea. A great collection combo consisting of a chaise, ottoman and 2-seater sofa, the color and print is contemporary without ever going overboard, and thats whats the part the catches the eye, I guess you could order other colors on special request, but if you like it just the way it is, I suggest using earthy tones and accents in the surrounds to mellow down the drama
	For more subtle versions, check out the Petisha collection. The three seater sofa and single chaise look neat within the context of most interior themes. The neutral tone is great and can be matched up against a great no. of colors and schemes. Its simple and sweet..
	The Carin collection looks like a sensible choice for smaller living areas and newly married couples. The 3-seater sofa is accompanied with a day bed. The earthy tone may be great for regulars. Overall, makes a durable and comfy design with metal legs. What I like is its European flavor that looks cozy and inviting, take a look

Bouquet Chair�Moroso

You believe �delicate is the word to describe flowers; all I can say is think again, for the Bouquet chair is a flower for you to sit on. One of the most contemporary designs in modern chairs, Bouquet has been designed for Moroso, an Italian designer furnitures manufacturer. Tokujin Yoshioka built the prototype out of 30,000 sheets of tissue paper (!!!!!) Later the tissue paper was replaced with faux suede in the final version. The little garden bouquet chair is an extraordinary piece of furniture.......

Another popular creation by Moroso, the Pane/Panne Chair has been named after its unique manufacturing method that used a mold that bakes the raw materials in a large oven, hardening and securing their form. Moroso, wanting to create a similar concept within practical course, introduced different prototypes in Milan that conformed to any body contour. Upholstered in a puffy white quilted industrial fabric used for carrying precision instruments, pulled over the chair form.

The work of Tokujin is truly innovative in the sense that it draws unpredicted aptitude from modern day materials and gives shape to extraordinary designs. Born in Japan in 1967, Tokujin Yoshioka trained under Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, and set up Tokujin Yoshioka Design in Tokyo. He has worked with Issey Miyake for over 20 years to fashion different things, like the Issey Miyake and A-POC stores and an installation at the Cartier foundation in Paris entitled Issey Miyake Making Things. His Honey pop and Tokyo pop chairs designed for Driade are a popular, and so is his Japanese garden, a futuristic design for the Driade store in Milan, a Tofu lamp for Yamagiwa, shop windows for Hermes, the Toyota stand at the Tokyo car show and the Stardust chandelier for Swarovski Crystal Palace.

There is a string of patio stuff that seems to have caught the imagination. I know you guys are curious about outdoor sofa / deep seating, deep seating outdoor furniture, wicker furniture and garden furniture. I have covered wicker and other deep seaters, rest will follow up. Well, better things early off; I like all your comments on the chaises, sofas and club chairs, all you guys.
	On more settees in the patio segment, lets go about a frenzy over some really typical designs on patio sofa, such as the Victoria armchair and ottoman. The teak wood construction with mortise and tenon joinery reminds me of the classic shape in a new bold remodel. Teak is one of my favorites after wicker when it comes to outdoor furniture. It is naturally resistant to weathering, and what I like is the comfy sunbrella cushions in quite some range of colors. I think makes a decent all-round design outdoors
	Coming back to the theme, the extension of Victoria is the this deep seating settee..I think it makes a great set, all of it. I like the Henna color, for something different, you could contrast it up in another earth tone, like the bay brown or camel. But I think it makes a great statement in the gardens, in a single tone, do make sure you tone it up well with a fine looking wood table.
	On modern designs in wood (after classics), I suggest the Ciera 2-seater. Uses combination material�teak, wicker and aluminium frame, together they speak of durability. What I like is the cozy two-seater design that looks quite romantic to me.

MIAMI - ART DECO DISTRICT

	I decided to spend my spring break in Miami. The weather was rainy and thunderstormy unlike the Floridas sun-drenched beaches.... in any case, I got to hang out at the South Beach where art deco buildings are concentrated. As modern architecture keeps evolving, South Beach claims to home the largest collection of Deco architecture in the world. And perhaps equally fitting sounds the idea of preserving it in its original state; it was certainly the thought behind the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL), founded by Barbara Capitman in 1976, in tandem with designers Leonard Horowitz and Lillian Barber to establish this section as a historic district.
The Art Deco District in Miami Beach has the biggest assimilation of 1920s and 1930s resort architecture in the world. Symbolizing an era when Miami was immensely promoted as a �tropical playground, the vivid colored buildings are a delight to look at. The Art Deco District was one of the first National Register listings to recognize the importance of the architecture of this period. One-way or other is to explore the city with one of MDPLs walking tours.
I guess, these expeditions can be availed with guides or by self. The guided tours are offered Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends at 10:30 am, and 6:30 pm on Thursdays. The prices are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, and free for members of the Preservation League. I preferred the ipod tour that allows you to explore at your own pace, and costs $15 per set.
Covering fourteen major buildings, I get to learn about the Deco history after the hurricane in 1926(amidst jazz thirties music) and the beeline followed to rebuild this burgeoning piece of real estate, explaining how Deco came to be on South Beach. As to the first one, I visited the �Amsterdam Palace�, located just north of 11th St, at 1114 Ocean Drive, Versaces own Casa Casuarinas, complete with history and some lapses. Then, the Leslie and Carlyle Hotels that represent typical Art Deco design, highlighted with windows in stripes, horizontal bonding, concrete overhangs above the windows, and grabbing verticals in front. Third on list was the Cardozo Hotel (1300 Ocean Drive), built in 1939 and designed by architect Henry Hohauser. Next was the tiara of the Ocean Drive, the Winter haven Hotel (1400 Ocean Drive), designed in 1939 by architect Albert Anis, one of the architects from a group that played a key role in South Beach cityscape of the day. The Commodore Hotel (Southwest corner) was built in 1936 and again designed by Henry Hohauser; it was made from low-cost materials, emphasizing concrete block facades.
Next in line, I came to a well-known building, the Post Office (Washington and 13th St.) done in a style known as Depression Moderne, the �stripped classic� design. The Old City Hall (1130 Washington Ave.) was an awesome sight. Reconstructed after the 1926 hurricane, with the efforts of real estate developer Carl Fisher (for whom Fisher Island was named) as a way of showing that Miami Beach would come back. On my list next was the Washington Storage Building, at 1001 Washington, the building was transformed in 1997 into the Wolfsonian Museum, a collection of late 19th to mid-20th century decorative and propaganda arts, run by Florida International University. My ipod next showed the Coral Rock House (900 Collins Avenue) and the Sherbrooke Hotel (facing it at 901 Collins) and I managed to catch some gr888 pics (next time). The Tiffany Hotel, one block south at 801 Collins, came in at number 11 on the list. The 12th stop on the journey took me back to Ocean Drive; I was gazing at the Park Central Hotel (640 Ocean Drive). (Known as the blue jewel of Ocean Drive), recognized by many as Hohausers greatest contribution was built in 1937. One block north, near the corner of 7th and Ocean, sat the Majestic Hotel (700 Ocean), appears to be under renovation. The Waldorf Towers Hotel was culmination point, and can be identified with its signature watchtower, presiding over its location at 860 Ocean Drive. NEW MODERN CITIES PLANNED IN SAUDI ARABIA

Talking of development and modern architecture, the focus is Saudi Arabia�the oil kingdom of the globe. With the hike in oil prices since 2002, a barrel touching $130 this month, the Saudi economy has picked up like fire in last five years. The result has been a well-planned diversification beyond the oil exports. Worlds largest Petrochemical plant; Petro Rabigh a joint venture by state-run oil company Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemicals of Japan. The project is Saudi Arabias boldest bet to create its identity beyond the oil regime, as an industrial powerhouse. The plant is part of a $500 billion investment program to build new contemporary cities, create millions of jobs and diversify the economy away from petroleum exports over the next two decades.

Abu Dhabi alone has been planning to spend about $1 billion for a new museum with the help of the Louvre, Paris. Dubai is planning to build a small-scale replica of the French city of Lyon, complete with residential housing, a museum, a culinary school and a soccer club. In Saudi Arabia, Riyadh is the gen-x town: sprawling over 40 miles, it is brimming with shopping malls, electronics stores and luxury boutiques. This move may be in tune with the race against globalization, where Saudis realize the need to create more industries to keep a growing population employed, which is expected to reach 40 million by 2025.

Geoffrey Bawa and Sustainability

	Last year on my visit to Srilanka, I had the chance of witnessing the work of the great Geoffrey Bawa. It was one thing to read about his architectural aptitude (and see his work on paper) and quite another to actually see what it means to tie modernity within the roots of a rich architectural culture. Unique to his work, one of his earliest buildings, a courtyard house built in Colombo for Ena De Silva in 1961 is an excellent example of this merger. Bawa has fused elements of Sinhalese domestic architecture and effortlessly blended it with concepts of open planning, indicating that an outdoor life can be equally viable on a tight urban plot.
Some of his prominent buildings include the Bentota Beach Hotel of 1968 which was Sri Lanka's first function-based modern resort hotel that looks into the needs of tourist with a rare sense of place and continuity. And its awesome! Then the famous Parliament house that is a spectacular sequence of copper roofs floating above a series of terraces rising from the water (an artificial lake). The Ruhunu University near Matara is again a masterpiece showcasing a matrix of pavilions and courtyards, mastered with a strong sense of theatre across the rocky hills with a look out over the Southern ocean. The Kandalama, another unique hotel amidst austere jungle around a rocky outcrop was amazing; and so was the Lighthouse at Galle which got destroyed in Tsunami 2004. Bawa also designed hotels in Bali and Bintan, I was told, and a few houses in Delhi and Ahmedabad, and a Cloud Center for Singapore.
I missed the house he designed for the Jayawardene family in 1997 on the cliffs of Mirissa, leaves me with something to come back for, a country as scenic and beautiful as some of finest architectural wonders (Bawa)works.the thought makes me smileagain...

Moving from Srilanka, I made a long due visit to India. I have been meaning to do an architectural tour esp. on the work of Mr. BV Doshi. Being modern and far-sighted does not always mean going off the league. This probably has been the mantra of visionary architects like Bal Krishna Vithaldas Doshi. I dedicate this blog to this well-known figure in Indian architecture. His work is inspiring for its sheer originality, sustainability, India ness and greenability. Born in Pune, India in 1927, he is an alumnus of the J. J. School of Art, Bombay. He was appointed as a senior designer on Le Corbusier's projects at Ahmedabad and Chandigarh in 1950. Doshi worked closely with Louis Kahn and Anant Raje, when Kahn designed the campus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. In 1958, he was a fellow at the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
	B.V. Doshi started his private practice in 1956 at Ahmedabad, known as Vastu-Shilpa, followed in 1962 by a firm called the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for Environmental Design. He also founded and designed the School of Architecture and Planning in Ahmedabad. Doshi worked for a partnership firm known as Stein, Doshi & Bhalla since 1977. Over the years Doshis sustainable architecture has gained momentum, he masters the adopts principles of modern architecture within the Indian context. It is what makes his thoughts on environment and urban concerns relevant. One of his key strengths has been architectural scaling and massing, and his designs are marked with a well-defined sense of space and community. Doshi's architecture provides is a gateway to modern Indian architecture.
	His work is a fusion of contemporary vision merged with old form. Much like his office building Sangath. In his words, �Sangath is a design laboratory where professionals from diverse disciplines are invited to explore new visions, concepts and solutions integrating arts, crafts, engineering and philosophy of life. Chasing the Chaise

No wonder all this outdoor furniture posts boiled down to� what about chaises and loungers!�. Yes, well.. how can I not look into it friends! After all most outdoors would look bare without outdoor chaise loungers. Relaxing on one of these beauties on a lazy afternoon with a book in hand is one of my favorite pastime.(often found asleep sun basking)
Ok. On modern chaise designs and those designer outdoor chaises that look like picture perfect things till you glance at the price tag. Well, you need not shell off so much to earn luxury anymore. I have come across two great chaise designs that almost had me rethink about changing my own
	The Athens Double Chaise is great for couples. And they are sturdy things too. Made with extruded and hand cast aluminum, the result is completely casual and relaxing unit. The metal needs some routine cleaning, but I like to save on it for long time by covering it. The fabric cushions are good too.now what I do like is the great design and flow of vertical linesand the casters make moving around easy.
	For single seaters, check out the Athens Single Chaise Lounge. Everything is the same except the price (should beyeah). The mounted armrests are fine. and the bronze finish looks fine too. Yes, I do like the duo. they are stylish yet simple�simple yet bestowed with elegance. A must check

Clubbing is on!

I like the response on outdoor stuff. Well, I thought I almost covered it all on outdoor seating and outdoor clubchairs, but then I knew there is more to it(call it intuition). More of the history, the old Victorian leather club chairs were cute button-backed things, buddies with the Chesterfield sofas. Historically, leather was more of the club chair upholstery, considered gentlemans furnishing material. From then to now, well we dont cling so much to leather.
As to the modern outdoor furniture version, must say the Luma Contemporary has got the appeal. The broad seat and back are comfortable in cozy fabric (not leather), and the anodized aluminium looks perffffect for outdoors. But what I really like is the delicate balance of function and aesthetics. The ITTO and IBAMA certified material would make a practical choice for most quality conscious buyers. The polyboard surface in grey is good against all the colors, but I personally prefer frost grey for its neutral ness.i think its a cool club chair
	The Luma Modern sofa is the big brother of the Luma Contemporary. The three seater is chic enough to have indoors and outdoor (though I think moving now and then wont be a great idea), but I think it is cozy enough to stay indoors. The colors are all great n all.and the fabric upholstery makes it all the more viable
	Luxury seating segment of furniture cant be complete without Ottomans. These multi-utility furniture pieces easily fit into many a space to prove its credentials. One of my favorites is again a Luma collection�the Luma Modern Ottoman. For its sheer minimalist design and modern looks, I fancy having one for my home, just like thatI guess, it comes in four sizes. I quite like the fabric upholsteryleather is common

There we go. I have been reading mails on more chairs, more sofas, and more mores like outdoor barstools and settes and, outdoor tables to go with such designsso, I am going to look into each, one at a time.
On outdoor seating and sofas, I guess I missed on settes and they really are great outdoor things to have any day. The Luma Settee looks like the modern version of the ex- f-o-r-m. One from the award-winning fabricator, made with IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) certified Ipe wood and anodized aluminium. I like the clean aesthetic lines and the finish that reflects the inherent natural beauty of Ipe. Ipe is claimed to be naturally resistant to rot, insects, UV exposure, ice, salt, abrasion, and splintering (and even 3 times harder than teak)! Designed for outdoors, the anodized aluminum ensures corrosion resistance, resistance to contamination and bacteria growth. I like it without any cushions, but there are cushions available too.
	This outdoor coffee table�the Luma�I like for its subtle presence! Made from Ipe wood that is considered as one of the densest and toughest wood on block, the construction is simple and stylish. ITTO certified wood (International Tropical Timber Organization), an organization promoting the use and trade of tropical forest resources. The anodized aluminium frame offers the right support and substance on design and durability, the table comes in five sizes to select from.
	On barstools, another Luma series must check out the Luma Modern barstool. The simplicity is enticing. I somehow like square designs on barstools for comfort reasons. Again, the ITTO AND IBAMA certified Ipe wood and sturdy anodized aluminium; it is great for outdoor bars. For bare versions, its just like it. For cushioned seats, there is acrylic fabric colors to choose from. Its hard to be simplehmmmwe like it.

On outdoor seating stuff, I dedicate this blog to club chairs. Ever since its popularity in the nineteenth century in England, club chairs have been paralleled with relaxation (all men furniture then, now no more). Outdoor club chairs and sofas may have been upgraded to use more innovative materials, but the quintessence is the same. Still meant for relaxation, the designs have grown more innovative and comfortable.
	Must highlight the ones I find very close to the past concept. Thinking of getting one of these modern club chairs by the end of this year as we shift to our new home with more open space. The Club 6 armchair is closest to the olden idea of relaxation. And what I like is the broad snug seat and back and the firm steel base that looks like leisure without carrying the bulkiness from the past. It is bestowed with a strange quality of lightness, which actually is soothing. Made from polyethylene-based synthetic fibers�looks like sturdy stuff�made to weather off bad seasons outdoors. The furniture claims to be non-toxic and recyclablecheck out the cool outdoor colors
	I like the extension of the above chair�the Club 2 seater sofa�its quite up-to-the mark. Constructed on sleek steel legs, the classic curved open back looks spectacular. I think it makes a combo-furniture. It can easily be used outdoors and indoors. Well, for outdoor I suggest natural colors, so that you can blend it up with neutrals and complimenting schemes
	For drama, check out the Club Sunny armchair. � la mode! But you need to really have an updated furniture theme to match up the innovative geometric design. Its a transformation of the armchair; I call it the future version. And its quite the thing. The design bestows the armchair with a mid-air light look for its very interesting use of shapes.
